There are two types of esophageal cancer – adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.  

Squamous carcinoma – It occurs in upper and middle third, this cancer is most often found in the upper and middle part of the esophagus, but can occur anywhere along the esophagus.  

Adenocarcinoma – It is mostly limited to lower part of the esophagus, near the stomach.

Diagnostics Tests For Treatment Planning-

Endoscopic Ultrasound – The oncologist guides a thin, lighted tube called an endoscope down the esophagus. The endoscope provides a clear view of the esophagus and allows the oncologist to remove a small sample of tissue, which is sent to a pathologist for further study.

PET scan – Positron Emission Tomography is the first step in staging esophageal cancer. It is usually done through a CT scan, which is a type of X-ray that produces images of the body in cross sections. Unlike conventional X-rays, advanced CT technology is faster, more sensitive and uses less radiation than older CT scans.

CT scan – This test also is used to stage esophageal cancer. The CT scan is a type of non-invasive imaging test that combines X-rays and computer technology to produce images of the body. It helps doctors determine whether the cancer has spread into other organs, such as the lungs or liver.
