Following diagnostic tests are performed for precised treatment planning –

Diagnostic Tests For Treatment Planning

Blood test – In the initial stages, doctors’ advice a blood test to identifydiagnosis of pancreatic cancer certain proteins shed by pancreatic cancer cell.

Imaging test – This includes CT scan and MRI.

Ultrasound – Specialists use high frequency sound waves to scan the abdominal region to get clear images of the organs. This is used for further diagnosis.

EUS (Endoluminal Ultrasonography) – This is done to further check on any unclear objects seen while performing a CT scan or MRI.

Biopsy – A small tissue from the pancreas is removed and checked in the laboratory by a pathologist.

Laparoscopy – The surgeon passes a laparoscope (lighted tube with a video camera) through a small incision to check for any abnormality in the pancreas and surrounding tissues.

Minimally Invasive Quick Recovery Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

Surgery is used to remove all or part of the pancreas. Surgically removing a cancer from the body can completely cure a patient if it has not metastasized.

  • Pancreaticoduodenectomy/Whipple surgery – This is considered as one of the most common surgeries for pancreatic cancer. The parts of the bile duct, gallbladder, head of the pancreas, duodenum, lymph node, the body of the pancreas, if affected, will be removed during this procedure. It improves long-term survival rates for pancreatic cancer patients
  • Distal Pancreatectomy – In this case, the bottom half of the pancreas is surgically removed. The surgeon may or may not remove the spleen.
  • Total Pancreatectomy – In this surgical procedure, the entire pancreas and spleen is surgically taken out.
  • Gastric bypass – If the stomach is blocked by a malignant pancreatic tumour, it is cut and sewn to the small intestine
  • Biliary bypass – During this surgical procedure, a small cut is made in the bile duct or gall bladder and then sewn to the small intestine
  • Laparoscopy – The minimally invasive surgical technique of laparoscopy is normally used before a scheduled pancreatic resection to determine if a more invasive operation is the best course of action. Since metastasis can sometimes be missed in CT scan, MRI or other imaging studies, laparoscopy is a reliable way to check for metastasis to other organs.

Chemotherapy – Chemoradiation is used to treat cancer that has spread beyond the pancreas, but only to nearby organs and not to distant regions of the body.

Radiation Therapy – Radiation therapy is performed to destroy only tumour cells. During the treatment a beam of radiation is directed through the abdomen to the cancerous area.
