Radiation is used to kill cancerous cells in this method. It is also usually used after surgery to prevent the cancer from re-occurring. Internal radiotherapy is a type of radiotherapy used to treat cancer of the tongue that is in an early stage. It involves sticking radioactive wires or needles directly into the tumour while you are under a general anaesthesia. The wires or needles, then release a dose of radiation into the tumour to kill the cancerous cells.

Chemotherapy – When the cancer is widespread, chemotherapy used in combination with radiotherapy to kill the cancer cells, if it is thought there is a significant risk of the cancer returning. Chemotherapy involves the use of powerful cancer-killing drugs.
