Diagnostic Tests For Ovarian Cancer

The diagnostic tests used to detect and confirm ovarian cancer include:

Blood tests – CA 125 is the blood test performed to confirm ovarian cancer. The blood test helps detect a protein called antigens that can be found at abnormally high levels in the blood serum of those women who have ovarian cancer.

Ultrasound – High quality sound waves are produced in order to get the precise structure of the ovaries. If abnormalities or regularities are found in the ovarian structure, further tests are performed.

PET Scan – Also known as Positron Emission Tomographic scans, this scan helps to identify those areas of the ovaries that suffer from altered blood supply. If identified, it confirms ovarian cancer.

CT Scan – Two dimensional images of the body are generated through a CT scan to check how far the cancer has spread.

Mammography – By doing this test, any chance of having metastatic tumours can be ruled out, as ovarian cancer can spread to the breasts and other distal organs.

There are mainly 2 types of surgeries involved in treating ovarian cancer.

Laparotomy – Gynecologists make large abdominal incisions to remove the ovaries, uterus, Fallopian tubes, surrounding lymph glands, omentum (a fold of fatty tissue) and tumour. It is also named as cytoreductive or debunking surgery

Laparoscopy Assisted Biopsy – A sample of the tumor is excised and examined under a microscope to confirm ovarian cancer and rule out malignancy. Once it’s confirmed, surgeon may decide to remove the uterus (Hysterectomy), Fallopian tubes and ovaries on both sides (bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy), fatty tissue that covers the bowels (omentectomy) and/or one or more lymph nodes (lymphadenectomy).

Chemotherapy Treatment – It involves the usage of modern cancer drugs that are administered intravenously or orally to kill cancer cells. This reduces the chances of the tumour returning elsewhere in the body.

Radiation therapy – High technology radiation is used after surgery to kill cancer cells without affecting the healthy tissues. It can be delivered either externally or internally. Internal radiation is delivered by implanting a small amount of radioactive material surrounding the cancer.
